I was in the middle of a conversation about Africa when everyone looked at me funny……
“Jesus was raised in Africa. He was there until the death of King Herod.”
What?
Matthew Chapter 2
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[f]
Most people don’t realize that Egypt is actually located in Northern Africa. It is facinating when you take some time to soak it in that in Genesis Joseph was sent there as a slave, rescued the entire nation of Israel when they came to live there. Though Egypt was their deliverance for a time it became their prison as they were turned into slaves for a couple hundred years – Moses was their deliverer and brought them out. So, then in Matthew we learn that Jesus took refuge there also. Powerful and I am sure that there are some of you who know more than I do about all this.
I’m going to add a song here to emphasize my passion. Rich Mullins wrote “My Deliverer” and it is written about Jesus as a small child listening to the Egyptian children singing a Hebrew song that the ancient slave children sang……. as Jesus listens to the song the irony is established that they are singing about Moses for the Hebrews but actually Jesus is the deliverer of us all – Hebrew, Egyptian, American, Muslim…….. we all must be born again to enter the kingdom of Heaven and Jesus is the only way.
I hope you enjoy the song.
