Good Morning, I have been reading and researching the Bible recently in 1 Samuel chapters 20 – 23:12. This is the point in David’s life where he knows King Saul wants to kill him and he must flee. In Chapter 20 Jonathan, the King’s son (and David’s best friend) cannot believe that his father is capable of such evil and so he puts his father to a test to discover that, in fact, David’s life is in danger. He is caught between his father and David.
41And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. 42And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
The NIV version says they wept together but David wept more. David was now a nomad. The first city he comes to he lies in order to get a weapon. The second place he goes he pretends to be crazy. Soon, he is hiding in caves and when word gets out he is flooded with men to lead. So he had to pull it together pretty quick to lead a band of broken men while on the run for his life from an evil king. Talk about stress.
I’ve been reading these chapters several times and adding to them Psalm 34 as it is recorded to be written by David during his pretending to be crazy time. Very moving and sad but I keep hearing over and over, David wept the most. I’ve made 3 notes on this so far…..
“Sometimes you must lie to find the truth….
Sometimes you must run to win the war….
Sometimes the truth will break your heart..”
